He played 20 games for the Cheetahs at Moorabbin Ice Rink, and made the cut for the first junior Victorian side, the Under-18 Tange Trophy, the same year Victoria won its sixth straight Brown Trophy (U21).

From 1970 until 1976 he played 110 games for the Pirates, winning the club's first premiership in 1976. In 1977 he moved to the Rangers for 6 games then transferred to the Blackhawks mid-year where he remained until 1981. He played 94 games for the 'Hawks without winning a premiership and coached the A-grade juniors. During his years at Ringwood he performed in ice shows doing comedy acts with ice hockey player, Ron Sullivan.

In 1982 he joined the Rangers, winning the club's 4th premiership that year, and then continued for a total of 74 games until 1984. In 1985 he moved to the Monarch-Saints, returning in 1987 and '88 for a total of 85 games and back-to-back Premierships. All up, he played 389 career games and won four state premierships. He was 28th on most games in the Victorian league since 1946 (2018).

He represented Victoria for over ten years in both the Brown Trophy and the Goodall Cup, winning the Goodall Cup three times — 1974, 1975 and 1978. In 1974, when he was 22, he represented Australia at the C-Pool World Championships in Grenoble France, and the practice games in West Germany in mid-February. Australia versus EC Deilinghofen (0-7), EV Herne (3-8), Dusseldorf EG (22-4), EC Hanover (8-1) and ERV Essen (6-2). He was a player in the West Germany tour of Australia in 1977, and in 1980, at 29, he played for the Dandenong Blackhawks in the inaugural National Ice Hockey League.

For 22 years Duncan coached Victoria's local junior and senior sides in the Brown and Tange Trophy tournaments, including the 1979 Champions at Newcastle. Several players he taught went on to play for Australia. Duncan often served on committees of the clubs he coached and the state association. He became president of the Rangers ice hockey club.
