BORN JULY 7TH 1930 AT YARRAVILLE in Melbourne Australia, Edward "Roy" Tutty was one of Australia's pioneering speed skating Olympians, and a former 5.5 Metre Yachting World Champion.
He represented Australia in the World Allround Speed Skating Championships in 1956, '57 and '59. Then, training for the Olympics on roller skates in Sydney's suburban streets, he competed at Squaw Valley USA with Colin Hickey in the Olympic Men's 1500m and 500m events in February 1960. At 29, he clocked 43.5 in the 13th heat of the 500m, going down to Manfred Schuler of Germany who recorded 42.5. Roy finished 35th in the 500m and 37th in the 1500m.
Tutty was also a long-time member of the 5.5 metre yachting community - particularly remembered for his 1981 world championship win in The Bahamas in the beautiful Evolution 5.5m Rhapsody, with Phil Smidmore and Col Beashel.
The fourth inductee to the Australian Ice Racing Roll of Honour, Roy's personal bests are 500m: 43.4 (1960); 1500m: 2.20.6 (1959); and 5000m 8.54.4 (1959).
